R.S. Hughes has annual revenue above half a billion dollars and more than 40 distribution centers. Its president still calls it a specialist. Industrial Distribution profiles the employee-owned distributor of adhesives, tapes and advanced materials, where reps present converting services the same way they present a 3M adhesive.
What the article says
Industrial Distribution’s feature by Andy Szal, published October 1, reports that R.S. Hughes has annual revenues “in excess of half a billion dollars” and operates more than 40 distribution centers. John Mathis, named president last year, describes the company as “a specialist distributor of adhesives, tapes and advanced materials across North America.” Earlier growth came from adding locations; the company is now focused on a “center of excellence” model, with distribution centers that serve as hubs for both local inventory and value-added services. Vice President of Marketing Jessica Sardina said the company has invested in its ERP to get “a holistic picture” of its customers, suppliers and products, and in its CRM and other customer-facing systems. Vice President of Sales Nate Freese said the converting services of Saunders by R.S. Hughes are part of what distribution sales reps present, the same way they present a VMI program or a 3M adhesive.
Why it matters at the top of the house
The position has held while the company grew: more than 40 distribution centers, and still one sentence about what it sells. The services are presented by the same reps, in the same conversation, as the products. Marketing sits next to the systems work: the vice president of marketing is the executive who speaks on the ERP and the CRM. The profile reports the plan and the structure; it gives no results for the new model.
